Ice and Heat Instructions
Do NOT apply ice or heat to an injury without first consulting one of our doctors who will guide you as to the correct protocol to follow.
Ice Protocol I:
- Place a thin towel over the area where the ice will be applied
- Place the ice pack over the towel for approximately 12 minutes (do NOT exceed 20 minutes)
- Remove the ice pack and place it back in the freezer for 15 minutes.
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 two more times (Ice should be applied to the area a total of three times)
Do this protocol daily until your doctor instructs you to stop. Do NOT exceed two times per day.
Ice Disc Protocol II:
You will need two ice packs for this protocol. You will also need to be aware if the area becomes painfully cold you MUST stop and allow the area to warm up for 15 minutes before continuing.
- Place a thin towel over the area where the ice will be applied
- Place one ice pack over the area for 30 minutes while the second ice pack is in the freezer.
- Switch ice packs and repeat for another 30 minutes.
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 (ice should be applied to the area for a total of two hours)
Do this protocol every day for 4 days in a row. ONLY do this protocol one time per day.
Heat Protocol:
- Place a thin towel over the area where the heat will be applied
- Place the hot pack over the area for 30 minutes.
Do this protocol daily until your doctor instructs you to stop. Do NOT exceed two times per day.
Alternating Hot and Cold protocol:
You will need two packs for this protocol:
- Place a thin towel over the area where the heat and ice will be applied
- Place the hot pack over the area for 3 minutes. Remove the pack and reheat it while you complete step 3.
- Place the cold pack over the area for 30 seconds
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 two more times (heat should be on the area a total of three times, cold should be on the area a total of three times). ALWAYS end with cold.
